Layout Share – Drops of Jupiter Kit from Scraptastic Club

Hello my friends! I’m back with a layout share. I don’t do shares often (not sure why), but I thought I would show you a few layouts I’ve worked on this month using the Scraptastic Club Drops of Jupiter Kit. Be sure to check out my YouTube Channel for process and kit share videos.

Here we go! Enjoy!

“Sweet Girl” Using Drops of Jupiter by Scraptastic Kit Club

IMG_3163

I love taking pictures of my girl when she is sleeping. These moments are fleeting. The reality is, they eventually grow into young adults and those sweet baby faces fade away.

Capture these moments people!

I am trying to hold on…FOREVER!

(I might be a crazy mother.)

My sweet pea came home from school one day totally exhausted. She nestled on the couch and took a quick catnap. Our days are long and I often wonder if she is getting enough sleep at night. The girl can go and go and go until she crashes. I guess this is typical of little ones…boundless energy.

I should harness it and sell it! I’ll be RICH!

IMG_3161

The Drops of Jupiter Kit from Scraptastic Kit Club is stunning: rich blues, deep oranges, yellows, and reds. A nice departure from some of the more popular color stories of today.

For the background, I used this beautiful constellation pattern paper called “Curiosity” from the Shimelle Star Shine Collection. I fussy cut the puffy clouds from another Shimelle pattern paper, “Rosetta” from the same collection. Making a “cutesy” page isn’t really my style, but when I saw the those awesome clouds, the idea just came to me!

I love when the happens!

IMG_3159

I wanted to use the natural form of the circles on the background paper to serve as the anchor for my title. The font is called “Thick and Thin” by Thickers…LOVE!  The design of the background paper and the clouds adds a lot of visual interest so I didn’t have to embellish much. I added a few enamel dots from We R Memory Keepers, stickers from Amy Tangerine, and die cuts from the Shimelle Star Shine Collection.

To complete the whimsical look of this layout, I used three Scraptastic exclusive acrylic stars and blue and white twine from American Crafts to create the illusion of stars falling from the sky. I think that I am pretty darn clever!

Scraptastic Design Team – Big Girl Things

IMG_1713

My little baby girl got her ears pierced…another rite of passage I suppose. We waited until she was old enough to make this decision on her own.

She is growing up way to fast!

Off we went to Claire’s, a retail jewelry store, where the staff is at least 10-12 years younger than me. While I was excited for my kiddo, I couldn’t help but feel a bit of fear; I mean for goodness sake, I was willingly allowing a total stranger to poke tiny holes in my sweet angel’s precious ears!!!!

Within in seconds it was done. My tiny-tiny tried as hard as she could to hold back the tears. Initially she was so excited, until she realized what was about to happen! Oh, poor girl! Alligator tears led to the acquisition of two lolly pops (thanks to the Claire’s sales clerk) and a brand new Beanie Boo (the latest stuff animal craze…think Beanie Babies…but ten times better and with bigger globe like eyes – okay that part is a bit scary)!

All is well. 🙂

IMG_1719

For this layout, I used the Scraptastic Gale Song Kit. I am working hard to use up every bit of this kit. It is easy to hoard!

Scraptastic Design Team – Lovebug and Stinky

So, I posted this layout a week ago and just got around to uploading the process video. (It’s been a crazy month!) This is probably one of the best layouts I’ve made in a long time. There are just some photos that are worth more than words. And these photos certainly fall into that category.

Lovebug and Stinky – my big brother Love (yes, his name is Love) and me…Stinky!

Long story…:)!

IMG_2815

You may be wondering how I inherited the childhood nickname Stinky. It’s a very long embarrassing story that is best told by my relatives. And believe me…they still give me a hard time and the incident that gave me this nickname will forever live on in our family history. I cannot escape it!

My brother on the other hand, well…the origins of his nickname are less embarrassing. As a young boy, he didn’t really like his name. That is until the “ladies” dubbed him Lovebug…oh imagine the narcissism that ensued! He has been Lovebug ever since!

IMG_2811

These photos were taken while we waited for my mother to have surgery. Of course we were getting on her nerves with our antics, as usual. It is not often that we get to play around like this. You know how it goes…you become adults with separate lives. It’s hard to connect sometimes. We are trying to do better.

Since we are so far apart in age, fifteen years to be exact, we didn’t exactly grow up together. He enlisted in the Air Force when I was just a toddler. I would get so excited when he came home for a visit. To me, his travels around the world were magical! As a military fireman, he has seen the worst. We are so proud of him! The “old man” retired a couple of years ago…we are thankful for his service.

IMG_2814IMG_2810

I am trying to scrapbook more about our relationship…which is evolving. We need each other more and more, especially as our mother begins to age. Believe it or not, we don’t have many pictures together…which is sad. I am bound and determined to change that. One photo and one layout at a time. I adore my older brother and I want our memories to last a lifetime!

VM Weekly Challenge – Create Together

I love scrapbooking with my little one. She is such a creative little sprite! In December of last year, after much convincing on her part, we finally broke down and bought her a craft desk of her own. Whenever I am working on projects, she is right there with me!

Last week the Victoria Marie FB Group members were challenged to create a layout using items from their stash. Since I wanted to get this story document, I thought this would be the perfect time to pull out some of my goodies – I’m falling in love with my stash again!

IMG_2794

It has been a while since I’ve used mixed media so I pulled out some Tim Holtz Distress Ink (Cracked Pistachio and Spiced Marmalade) to create a watercolor background. Next, I used a Heidi Swapp stencil and Liquitex model paste to layer small dots over the distress ink.

IMG_2792

I layered pattern papers behind the photo and embellished with a variety of empherma to include wood veneer shapes (I used distress ink to paint these pieces), washi tape, and die cuts. I also added a bit of gold thread for interest and whimsy!

IMG_2793

Here is a list of items I used from my stash:

  • Paper – Pink Paislee Memorandum
  • Dear Lizzy Accent and Phrase Stickers
  • Tim Holtz Distress Ink – Cracked Pistachio
  • Tim Holtz Distress Ink – Spiced Marmalade
  • Heidi Swapp Mist – Mint
  • Heidi Swapp Mist – Butter
  • Title: Dear Lizzy Snapshots (Thickers – American Crafts)
  • Title: Basic Grey Fact or Fiction
  • Dear Lizzy Die Cut Shapes
  • Heidi Swapp Circle Stencil
  • Wood Veneer Shapes – Studio Calico
  • Washi Tape – The Paper Studio
  • Thread – Coats Metallic
  • Twine – American Crafts
  • Rub ons – Scraptastic Kit Club (exclusive)
  • Heidi Swapp Roller Date Stamp
  • Versa Fine Ink – Black

Weekly Challenge! Victoria Marie Facebook Group

Each week the Victoria Marie Design Team hosts a weekly challenge on the Victoria Marie Facebook Group Page. This week is Free Style and designer Cacie Carrillo-English challenged us to create tags and to use them in a creative way. I plan to use my tags to decorate birthday gifts! Here’s what I created!

IMG_2481

Everything I used for this challenge was pulled from my stash. I have a variety of embellishments from Maggie Holmes, American Crafts, Thickers, and The Paper Studio.

IMG_2480IMG_2479IMG_2478

I love to cluster and personalize embellishments. The stars were covered in gold embossing powder – this adds a lot of sparkle and shine!

IMG_2477

I distressed the edges of the tags and some of the die cuts with Cracked Pistachio Distress Ink by Tim Holtz.

Want to see how these tags came together? Check out the process video on the Victoria Marie YouTube Channel!

I hope you play along with our challenge! Happy scrappin’!

Scrapbook Process: “You and Me”

Hello friends! I am back with my first layout of 2016 using some goodies from my stash!

IMG_1780

Last summer my family and I took a quick staycation to Austin, TX. I absolutely love Austin! This photo was taken at the Thinkery, a children’s science museum. I recently came across this selfie of me and my little munchkin girl, cuddling a bit while taking a break from our many adventures.

IMG_1777

I scrapbook a lot about my relationship with my daughter for several reasons. She is an only child (we will not have any more children) and I want her to have a rich history of her childhood. And I might sound biased by saying this but…she is a super cool kid! Truly and honestly…she is a lovely little girl who has an infectious smile and a hardy sense of humor. She’s quite the cheeky little sprite with so much energy! As she gets older and matures, our relationship becomes that much stronger. I really hope that she will always know that I am her soft place to land…no judgements, only love and support.

I am going to stop now…my eyes are leaking!

IMG_1778

Okay, on to the layout. I used the Amy Tangerine Finders Keepers Collection from American Crafts. I LOVE me some Amy and this collection is perfect for documenting summer memories. Amy has such a cool California vibe and it certainly shows her design aesthetic. Be sure to check her out (as if you haven’t already, duh!).

IMG_1779

I wanted to keep this layout light and free flowing! I was inspired by the style and colors of this kit…as if I was walking along the beach in L.A., soaking in the sun! West Coast living is so relaxed and that really comes across in this collection.

IMG_1776

I love how the photo is so crisp against the colors in the collection. I had no rhyme or reason for the placement of the embellishments and washi tape. I just went with the flow.

The collection includes an awesome pack of printed card stock and acetate pieces that are perfect embellishments. I used the various patterned washi tapes to add more interest to the layout. The coordinating Thickers fonts worked perfectly with my overall design and add the right finishing touch to this layout.

IMG_1775

Materials Used:

  • Heave White Card Stock – The Paper Studio
  • Wood Veneer hearts and arrow – Do It Yourself by American Crafts
  • Printed Card Stock and Acetate Shapes – Amy Tangerine Finders Keepers
  • Washi Tape – Amy Tangerine Finders Keepers
  • Thickers “Today” – Amy Tangerine Finders Keepers
  • Thickers “Goodness” – Amy Tangerine Finders Keepers

December Daily 2015 – The Finale

IMG_0349

I am so happy to announce that I have completed my December Daily album for 2015! In fact, I finished my album on December 26th. I love, love, love this project and I am looking forward to doing it again in 2016.

There is something about taking time to document your everyday activities, your everyday life. December is always very busy for me (as it is for everyone) so keeping up with this project proved to be challenging at times. But, I was committed to this project and I was determined to keep it simple.

IMG_0403

This was my second year doing this project. My approach was a bit different. When I did this album in 2014 (finished the album in 2015), I didn’t take the time to really understand the process. I sort of did my own thing without much guidance or a plan. I did not complete layouts daily and I only wanted to document the special holiday moments that take place for my family in December. And that approach is fine. However, what I found is that I missed the point of the project.

I wanted to go back to basics in 2015. And that’s exactly what I did.

Before getting started, I took the Ali Edwards Storytelling with December Daily class. I highly recommend that you take this class! Ali shared her wisdoms, suggestions, and advice for tackling this project. Next, I purchased the Ali Edwards December Daily Kit. Ali has a very clean and simple style which I absolutely adore so her kit was perfect for me. I also purchased the Scraptastic Stocking Stuffer kit to supplement.

IMG_1267

I spent two days prepping my album – this is such an important step! I am typically the type of scrapper who is a “game time” decision maker. I let pattern paper and embellishments guide me in most cases. However, since this project is mainly about storytelling, I didn’t want to get caught up in embellishing. Prepping the album in advance saved me so much time! There were days when I was able to knock out layouts with no problem. And then there were days when I would come home, dog tired, not really in the mood to tell a story. Having the embellishing done in advance allowed me to focus on the story and not feel forced to make design decisions when I just wasn’t feeling it!

I am very deadline driven so I set a goal to finish my December Daily on December 26th and I accomplished that! I felt so proud of myself! I think I deserve a happy face sticker!!!! Yay! The album is done and ready for all to enjoy.

Is my album perfect, no.

Is my album done, YES!

Did I tell a lot of really good stories, YES!

Did I tell some “not so great” stories, YES!

And it’s all good!

IMG_0360

A few take aways:

  1. Not all of your stories are going to be great. I suggest that you keep it real…tell it like it is. Sometimes the story will find you and other times you will find the story.
  2. Do not focus on perfection. You will love some of your layouts and you will dislike others…that’s okay!
  3. Don’t compare your December Daily albums to other December Daily albums! It’s okay to be inspired or to model other scrappers…but do what feels right for YOU! Make it yours!
  4. Take the Storytelling with December Daily class! Just do it! Trust me…you will learn so much about Ali’s process and how to make it your own! If not Ali’s class…check out some of the tutorials on YouTube. Try to understand the process before you dive in.
  5. Be flexible and make it your own! This project should be fun and NOT stressful! There will be some days when you do not want to work on your album or perhaps you work on some pages over the weekend. It’s okay!
  6.  Focus on the story FIRST!!!!! This is a documentation of your life for 25 or 31 days! How cool will it be to look back on these moments years from now!
  7. Set a goal to finish your album! It doesn’t matter if you have 10 stories of 31 stories…just tell the story and get it done!
  8. Truth: Some of your stories may not always be happy or joyful. It’s okay to document those “not so perfect” moments. Telling these stories shows that we are human and not all of our memories are going to be perfect.

Most of all…ENJOY THIS PROJECT! Have fun and do not stress!

Here’s a tour of my December Daily 2015 Album!
