5 Signs You are Overthinking this Scrapbooking Thing

Scrapbooking is supposed to be a relaxing hobby – just grab some photos, a few supplies, maybe a snack, and create a layout, right? But how many times do we labor in the land of overthinking every single detail of every single layout, comparing our work to others, or allowing the lack of time to affect the creative process?

Oh the madness!

If you are a fellow solider in the overthinker’s war, then you may relate to the following.

5 Reasons You are Overthinking this Scrapbooking Thing (More or Less)

#1 – “P” is for Perfection (and a trap): Do you find yourself pining over every single detail on your layout? Does it take you a long time to make product or design decisions because each element must “perfect”? Have you reprinted photos multiple times in hopes of settling on the “one photo” that will perfectly document your story? Do the colors of your elements and paper have to “match”? Have you recreated a layout multiple times until you “got it right”? Well my friend. Congrats! You are a victim of the perfectionist trap!

#2 – The Comparison Trap (so many traps): Do you compare your creative work to other scrapbookers? Have you set the bar so high (for yourself) that you become discourage about scrapbooking or don’t think that you measure up? Oh boy…you may have fallen into the comparison trap.

#3 – Your Scrapbook Space is Messy = “I cannot scrapbook today!”  Your scrappy space is a hot mess (and the rest of the house is too) and you cannot possibly scrapbook unless your space is neat and tidy. But what if I told you that you can be creative even when your space is blown up? WHAAATTT??!!!!

Messy

#4 – You Don’t Have the Right Products/Supplies: Do you feel that you need the latest “on trend” products in order to make stunning scrapbook pages? Spoiler alert: You don’t need all of the cool stuff to be a scrappy boss!

#5 – You Don’t Have Enough Time to Scrapbook: Life has an interesting way of filling up our schedules with stupid stuff like…adulting (ugh). Wouldn’t it be nice to have endless creative time? Guess what friend? Most of us don’t and many scrapbookers have allowed the lack of time to affect their creative output. For some scrapbookers, not having enough creative time is an all or nothing situation. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Okay, so at this point, you are probably waiting to hear my “break the internet” solutions.

Well here goes…

STOP OVERTHINKING! STOP! STOP! STOP!

(Internet…broken!)

Scrapbooking is a super fun hobby! It’s relaxing and therapeutic (for some). It is a form of creative expression. Scrapbooking is the vehicle by which we tell our most cherished stories and preserve our memories. Overthinking this wonderful hobby is a waste of creative energy!

Ready for a few solutions? Here goes!

solutions

Source: Memecreator.org

Break Free of the Traps: There is a saying that goes, “Strive for progress, not perfection”. Your layouts are not going to be perfect. Embrace this and you will be set free! The creative process ebbs and flows – some of our layouts will be stunning, others not so much. Do not waste your creative energy on using the perfect elements on your layouts or comparing your work to other scrapbookers. You are a unique scrappy boss!

Own your style, embrace imperfection, and appreciate your creative output. Move toward creative progress…the more you create, the better scrapbooker (or card maker, or painter) you will become. Also, you do not need all of the fancy tools, and gadgets, and on trend products to make a great layout. Trendy products are great, but certainly not necessary. Use and enjoy your scrappy stash!

Embrace the Mess! Admittedly, I am the type of scrapper who must have a “clean space” or a “clean house” in order to create. But, when the creative juices are flowing, I force myself to embrace the mess! I challenge you to clear a space on your craft table or desk (don’t go crazy), grab a few supplies, and make something. Give yourself the opportunity to indulge without feeling guilty about the stacks of pattern paper in the corner of your room, the dirty dishes in the sink, or the piles of laundry on the floor (it’s just going to pile up again anyway). 🙂 Give your creative soul the attention that it needs!

You Have Time to Create: I am a big proponent of owning my creative time. It’s just as important as brushing my teeth, exercising, and getting sleep. It’s okay to give yourself permission to take time out to fuel your creative soul. This can be accomplished by simply scheduling (and prioritizing) your creative sessions – it doesn’t have to be long…15 minutes here, 30 minutes there. Don’t make this complicated. You don’t need endless hours of creative time to make a great layout.

Also, consider how you use your time and make adjustments accordingly. For example, I have reduced the amount of time I spend on social media in order to have more creative time. This is hard given that my business relies on my social media presence. But it’s necessary to unplug and fill my time with creative activities. You have the time…go find it and own it!

(Okay, I have solved all of your problems. You are welcome. 🙂 )

Friend, I encourage you to let go and enjoy this wonderful hobby. Break away from overthinking and let the creative process do what it is meant to do. Sometimes it will be clean, other times it will be messy. And that’s okay. Free yourself from the “overthinking shackles” and find joy in the creative journey without conditions and limitations. You will be glad that you did. 🙂

Felicity Jane Creative Media Team – Pretty Girl Layout and Process Video

Hey scrappy bosses! How about another Felicity Jane scrapbook layout? This week on the Felicity Jane Blog, we are continuing to focus on using florals as part of our layout designs.Pretty Girl Thumbnail

Felicity Jane kits are packed with floral elements! From pattern papers to die cuts and stamps, there are plenty of floral icons that can be used to create a stunning layout. For this page, I used the floral die cuts from the Brie Kit as a layered anchor for my photos.

Photo 4

To being, I created a background using the a piece of white card stock and a strip of the Floral and Swiss Dot pattern paper. Next, I positioned two 3×4 photos in the center of my layout and flanked each side with a puffy frame. To the top left, I added a die cut pom pom banner for interest and whimsy!

Photo 3

Underneath the photos, I layered several floral die cuts from the Brie Kit, leaving a bit of space for my title. I added three puffy hearts to the left and right side of the floral cluster.

Photo 5

To the bottom center of my photos, I created a title using the Brie die cut word “pretty”, a puffy sticker that reads “favorite” and I spelled the word “girl” using the Felicity Jane Essentials Puffy Alphabet letters (gold). To finish the layout, I added a label to the top left photo that says “remember” and I stamped the sentiment “dream big” from the Brie Stamp Set under the title.

I hope you are inspired to use floral elements on your next scrapbook page or project!

Felicity Jane Creative Media Team – “Happy Boss”

Hey friends! I am back with a travelers notebook spread using floral stamps from the Felicity Jane Henley, This Is, and London stamp sets.

Felicity Jane Creative Media Team

This week the Felicity Jane Creative Media Team was challenged to use flowers as a central design element for our projects. Since several Felicity Jane stamp sets include flowers, I decided to use those floral stamps to create die cuts. Using white card stock and black pigment stamping ink, I stamped several flower and leaf elements on heavy white card stock.

Next, I fussy cut all of the stamped flowers and leaves – a process best enjoyed while watching a good movie!

IMG_5402

Once all of the flowers and leaves were cut, I layered the elements to the right and left side of the spread starting with the larger flowers first, then the leaves, and finishing with the small flowers for added interest. I added dimension to some of the smaller flowers with foam squares.

IMG_5399

To complete the layout, I created a small cluster of layered die cuts (Brooke Kit) and chipboard flare (Brie Kit) and I added the title “Happy Boss” using the chipboard word “happy” from the London Kit and Felicity Jane Essentials Puffy Alphas (Black). Lastly, I stamped the sentiment “Spread your wings and fly” from the Brie Stamp Set.

Thanks so much for stopping by! To see the process video for this layout, head to the the Victoria Marie YouTube Channel. See ya next time!

Documenting Magic Scrapbook Layout – WDW 2018 Intro Page

DM PV#1 WDW 2018 Title Card.jpg

Finally! I know you have been eagerly waiting and here it is…the first layout for my Documenting Magic Series on the Victoria Marie YouTube Channel and Blog! To learn more about this series, click HERE.

Creating a Disney themed album can be a large undertaking. I returned from my WDW vacation with a ton of stories and lots of photos. To be honest, I was a little overwhelmed by the entire process! So, I thought I good place to start is to create a title page that will set the tone for my WDW scrapbook album.

To begin, I selected one of my favorite photos from our trip. This photo features my family on Main Street USA at Magic Kingdom park, with the iconic Cinderella Castle in the background. This was one of many photos we took using the Disney Photo Pass service.

IMG_5132 2.jpg

To the top left, I created a cluster using elements from the Say Cheese I, II, and III Collections by Simple Stories. To the gold camera die cut, I layered a banner that reads “We Are Here”. Under the banner, I adhered a small callout die cut (“Hello Magic”) – this die cut serves double duty as an embellishment and to cover the face of a random person that I did not want featured on my layout! I finished the cluster with enamel dots and flat back flare.

E6aY9

To the bottom right of the photo, I created a second cluster using a chipboard frame, a cluster of balloons, a gold glitter Mickey Mouse (punched from an EK Success Disney Mickey Punch), and gold glitter hearts. For the title, I used the “Journal” sticker font by Thickers and cream and red font stickers by October Afternoon, both from my stash.

To see this layout come together, head on over to the Victoria Marie YouTube Channel! New layouts for the Documenting Magic Series will be posted every Sunday so be sure to subscribe. And when you do, click on the bell indicator so you will be notified every time a video is posted to the VM YouTube Channel!

Back in Business…Again!

IMG_4892.jpg

See that face…that is the face of someone who, after a very long time (and lots of struggle) is officially working for herself full-time again…YAY! My journey over the past year has been filled with a lot of trials and a few successes. But I am happy to report that its full steam ahead for this little “entrepreneur who could”!

Let me catch you up…

In 2016, I quit my full-time career in the non-profit world to pursue my dream of starting a business in the crafting industry. You can read more about my experience here and here and here. The first few months were super exciting and thrilling! Making the decision to work for myself has been fantastic and I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I created a series of online classes, hosted the 2nd Annual Victoria Marie Scrapbook Retreat, worked on designs teams, and was featured on a podcast. Life couldn’t get any better at that point. I was riding the wave!

Then things changed.

In early 2017, my family experienced a financial catastrophe of which we were not prepared for. My business was still very much in its infancy and our cash flow was dwindling. My spouse and I decided that I needed to go back to work. I was not particularly happy about this. But, eating and paying rent are important “adulting” type things that must be done. So I put on my big girl panties and found a job. You can read more about this part of my journey here.

18765637_1994773367412179_7474111329382780757_n

Luckily, I was able to find a part-time position with a non-profit that also supports a private school that my daughter attended. The hourly rate wasn’t bad and we got reduced tuition for my kiddo…no brainer. However, the job was way more intense that I could have ever imagined. I went from working 30 hours a week to over 40 hours a week. After a long day, I would come home, try to make dinner, play with my kid, and around 10:00 pm (or later), I attempted to get work done for my business.

Was I successful at this? Hell no!

I sucked!

I was drowning!

And I felt like a failure.

Fast forward to March 2018. I was tired, stressed, and feeling like I could no longer carry on with my business. In addition to working long hours and taking care of my family and other responsibilities, I also had to assist my mother with the sale of her home as she has decided to live with my family. This meant that all of my weekends for the past 3-4  months have been consumed by this process. This presented a big problem because I reserved the weekends for catching up on my business projects.

Catching up? Ha! About that…

So, I stayed perpetually behind in everything in my life. I am amazed that I was able to get some things done. However, major projects got put on the back burner (i.e. Documenting Magic YouTube series, classes, my sketch book, etc.). Commitments with friends were cancelled because I needed every ounce of free time to work on my business projects or to clean my house or entertain my kid or help my mom…or something. And with each passing day, I felt more and more defeated.

I almost closed my business.

Almost.

img_6804

The truth is…I could not do it all. I had to make some short-term choices in order to ease the burden of dealing with my over scheduled, over worked life.  I created a list of the projects that I could feasibly do and another list of projects that would need to be put on the back burner for now. I breathed a sign of relief and carried on as best as I could.

I continued to work long hours, both away and at home. I was exhausted yet determined. I had to make this work.

And I did. Barely.

Then one day, the storm cleared and a path was created for me to start working my business full-time again. Opportunities started coming my way so it no longer made sense to juggle my side hustle job with my business. I made the decision to quit my side job in June 2018.

IMG_5012

So, here I am…the second day of working for myself again and it feels so good, scary, and overwhelming. I have a lot of work ahead of me and that’s okay. I welcome the challenge. I have learned so much over the past year – many lessons that have strengthen my resolve to be a better and stronger business owner.

Lesson One – It’s okay to have a side hustle while building your business. You have to pay the bills and eat. Stay humble.

Lesson Two – Never give up! NEVER give up on your dreams. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will your business (or insert whatever your dream is here). 🙂

Lesson Three – It’s okay to admit defeat and to take a different direction when you need to. Your grand plan will not fall apart.

Lesson Four – Nothing is forever. Things will change. Situations will change. You will change…so embrace it.

Lesson FiveYou must show up and work. Period. You must put in the time and action needed in order to make your business (or whatever) successful. Start somewhere and keep moving forward, keep showing up, and keep working!

I am so proud of myself for staying the course and not quitting when the going got tough. There is something to be said about perseverance and determination.

Now, if you will excuse, I have work to do. Vicki…OUT!
