Why You Should Stay in Your Own Lane – The Comparison Trap

In 2019, I experienced a series of creative slumps. I felt that everything that I made was 100% crap! I struggled with creative ideas and I began to produce a lot of lack luster projects. Unfortunately, I started comparing my creative work to that of my colleagues. It seemed like they were making highly innovative scrapbook layouts, traveler’s notebook spreads, mini albums, and pocket pages. Meanwhile, my brain grasped at any creative idea I could drum up.

I took a seat at the front of the struggle bus.

I also felt that I wasn’t producing content as fast as other YouTube content creators. I wondered how they were able to post high quality content on their YouTube channels everyday (or every other day) and why I struggled to only produce 1 video per week.

Sadly, I fell into the comparison trap.

It happens to the best of us. We are cruising along, doing our thing, then BAM! We begin to doubt our abilities and judge our talents against the talents of others. The comparison trap is vicious, leaving many people feeling as if they can’t cut the mustard. And sadly, some folks quit or give up something that they truly enjoy out of frustration and/or jealously of others.

You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge.” Sage words from my good friend Dr. Phil!

(Okay, technically, he went to the University of North Texas, the same college I attended for my bachelors and masters degrees, so naturally we are good friends. I digress…)

After months of laboring in the comparison trap, I finally had to face reality. There was nothing wrong with me or my creative work. The truth is…my expectations were out of whack. I was comparing apples to oranges.

Interestingly, we all do this at some point. I have talked to dozens of scrapbookers over the years who have stopped making layouts because they began to compare their talents against the talents of other scrapbookers.

We all have an idea or expectation of what we want our projects to look like. We get frustrated when it takes us longer to master a specific scrapbooking technique when it seems so easy for Suzy Q!

Darn you Suzy Q!

So, what do we do? How do we begin to stay in our own lane and confront the comparision trap head on?

First, acknowledge when you are starting to compare yourself to other artists. Do you feel jealous, envious, angry, or sad when you are looking at the work of a fellow artist? Do your behaviors change as a result? Do you become stressed, experience a creative block, or simply want to give up? Address how you are feeling head on and be honest with yourself.

Second, do something about it. You may chose to simply let go of those feelings and direct your energy into making projects that you love and enjoy, appreciating your individual talents, and accepting your limitations.

Or, in some cases, maybe you stopped following a specific designer on social media if you cannot seem to shake your feelings. It’s okay to let go until you are able to consume their content without falling victim to the comparison trap.

Lastly, recognize that we are all different. We have different talents, interests, expectations, work flow processes, and circumstances that impact what we create. You are doing yourself a disservice by comparing your talents and output to that of someone who’s circumstances, talents, years of experience, and bandwidth are different than yours.

At the end of 2019, I resolved to focus on my creative goals and projects, absent from comparing my work to that of my colleagues. I learned to appreciate what I bring to the creative arts industry and to support this community the best way I know how. I took ownership of my insecurities and came through the comparison trap storm a little be wiser and a lot more confident.

I learned to stay in my own lane.

Scrapbook Process Video | Favorite Selfie using the March 2020 Hip Kit Club Scrapbooking Kit!

Hey Scrap Bosses!

Do you have a tween or teen in your life that loves to take selfies? I sure do! My camera roll is filled with selfies of my daughter and of course…I have to scrapbook them!

As my daughter gets older, she is becoming less interested in me taking her photo, and more interested in taking a gajillion selfies on my iPhone! Over the past couple of years, I’ve taken the opportunity to scrapbook some of her selfie photos. These photos will later serve as a photographic representation of her growth and development as well as her personality.

What a great thing to document!

To see this layout come together, click on the following video, now available on the Victoria Marie YouTube Channel! Photos of this project along with a list of available products used is provided below.

The mix of black and white with pops of color is a fantastic design technique!

Want to use multiple photos without creating a two page spread? Considering using a photo editing app or website like Pic Frame or Pic Monkey to make multiphoto collages!

Layer clusters of embellishments around your title for added interest.

I love the bold and colorful style of this layout…so much fun! I hope you were inspired to make something awesome today! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Scrapbook Process Video | Side Hustle

Hey Scrap Bosses! Check out my latest video, Side Hustle, now available on the Victoria Marie YouTube Channel!

This layout features a products from the March 2020 scrapbooking kit from the Hip Kit Club. I recently rejoined the Hip Kit Club after a short break and absolutely fell in love with this kit! A list of available products are provided below.

At the beginning of March, I took a part-time job with my former employer. A co-worker quit abruptly and the agency needed to replace her position quickly. What started out as a temporary position and a way for me to make some extra cash while I continue to build Victoria Marie Designs, turned into a semi-permanent position.

I wasn’t sure if I wanted to accept this job, but I loved the opportunity to get out of the house for a few hours during the week. Working at home for myself can be a bit isolating. Also, I wanted to make some extra cash to help pay off a couple of credit cards, add to our savings, and cushion Victoria Marie Designs (for those months when my income is variable – a reality of freelancing). I have never been too proud to take a side hustle.

I wanted to document this story because (1) I want to remember all of the steps it took for me to create and grow a success business. Taking a part-time job and contract position in addition to running a business is nothing to be ashamed of, and (2) there is a second part of this story that I will share in an upcoming video. You’ll have to wait to see!

Meanwhile, check out the process video for this layout on the Victoria Marie YouTube Channel! Photos and product links are listed below. Enjoy!

This 12x 12 inch layout was so much fun to create! The March 2020 kit by the Hip Kit Club features so many awesome products!

Layered florals and butterflies add a touch of whimsy and movement to the layout.

A 4×6 inch cut apart pocket card was used for journaling. Each block was typed on my computer using a text box, sized to fit into the open journaling spaces of the pocket card.

A frame backed with pattern paper created the perfect anchor for a cluster of butterflies and a coffee cup.

Look for more process videos and scrapbook projects to come. Thanks so much for stopping by!

Scrapbook Process Video – Pieces of Us Project by Ali Edwards

Hey Scrap Bosses!

I’m back with a brand new process video on the Victoria Marie YouTube Channel and Blog!

A few weeks ago, Ali Edwards hosted an impromptu storytelling journey called Pieces of Us – A Self Portrait Community Project. According to Ali, she created this project for the following reasons:

  1. To get yourself in the story. Literally
  2. To play and experiment with your camera (most likely I’ll just be using my iPhone).
  3. To practice developing your own photo voice.
  4. To practice loving ourselves using the lens of our cameras. I love this as a February project.
  5. To play along with a community of storytellers.

Hundreds of storytellers from all over the world participated in this project, sharing daily photos and words via Instagram. I truly believe there is space to tell our stories through photos as well as words, to be introspective, honest, and raw about where we are now and our perspective on life. This was the perfect project do just that.

To complete this project, I created a 12 x 12 scrapbook layout featuring the photos the I took and the journaling I wrote that correspond with each prompt. This was a fantastic project and I am so glad that I took the time to strengthen my storytelling voice through photos journaling!

Take a look at the process video for this project, now available on the Victoria Marie YouTube Channel. Photos of this project are posted below! Enjoy!
